Doha Film Institute (DFI)
At the excellent Al Jazeera International Documentary Film
Festival in Doha, Qatar - I was impressed by the work of DFI. They worked hard with getting students and
others to check out the screenings of the 287 documentaries at the festival.
DFI also conducted interviews with Iphones, and to
my surprise they did come out very well.

Winner at Al Jazeera
International Documentary Film Festival
And the winner is...."Israel vs Israel".
Of course, it´s a political statement by the
most influential Arab-broadcaster, to select a documentary about
Jewish peace activists as its opening film.
That the jury a few days awarded picked the
film as a winner is a major acknowledgement of my work. Hopefully,
this is only the beginning.

The last thing an American Jew expects to be called by
another Jew is a “Nazi,” yet this is the reality progressive
Jews fighting the illegal occupation inside Israel face from
fanatic Israeli Jews. ISRAEL VS. ISRAEL is one of the most
important documentaries I have seen in the growing arsenal
of cinematic testimonies to the oppression of the
Palestinian people. So many films have documented the
devastation and despair of Palestinians yet few films
highlight the lesser-known struggle of progressive Israeli
and international Jews who risk their careers, reputations,
and lives for the Palestinian cause.
Carlsson’s one hour exploration of these unsung heroes is a
moving portrait of the fight from the inside – four men and
women who stand up to both the Israeli state and to fanatic,
violent and mentally unbalanced settlers. Disparate moments
of bravery are woven together and make up a larger picture
of solidarity and community – of a social, political and
cultural movement that includes Israeli citizens, rabbis,
former IDF soldiers, and Jews from the West. What they face
is the overwhelming violence of the Israeli state as it
continues its policy of occupation, oppression and expansion
as well as fundamentalist militants whose children are
encouraged to throw stones and sewage at elderly Palestinian
women as they pass in the street. The images are shocking
and terrifying. That such cruel manifestations of life on
this planet exist is heartbreaking. Celebrating those that
defy their own government, their own people, and who risk
life and limb to fight with the Palestinians is one of the
most important stories ever to be told from this ongoing

The polar circle
In January, time to travel to the polar circle
and compete at the great festival for documentaries in Tromsö,
Norway. Among other fine documentaries about the
Israeli-Palestinians conflict, Israel vs Israel will be screened
several times.

Sverige är i krig, men när kommer bilderna och
reportagen som skildrar kaoset, rädslan, hatet och döden?
Medierna i SR P1
intervjuade mig efter att jag inte hittat några
som helst krigsbilder i SVT's arkiv. Ska bli intressant att höra
interna reaktioner de närmaste dagarna. Samtidigt lutar det åt att
jag reser till Afghanistan snart. Sugen och osugen på samma gång.

Det regnade SMS på söndagskvällen. Gamla vänner
smörjde egot. Svenska Dagbladet skrev en fin
recension.

Hej Terje!
Detta sker inte ofta, men jag vill å det varmaste tacka för din
dokumentär Israel vs Israel.
Så enormt gripande, välgjord och smärtsamt påminnande om att
oskyldiga, främst palistinska men även israeliska liv skördas i
varje stund Israeliska staten, omvärlden, vi, inte gör något mer åt
saken.
Jag är skådespelerska, blandad i ursprung mellan arabisk, italiensk
och svenskt, har även traditioner av det muslimska, katolska och
kristna, men fick barn med en troende judisk man. De diskussioner vi
hade då vi levde samman rörde mer denna konflikt mellan israeler och
palistinier än normala relationsproblem, och det var då jag med full
kraft insåg vidden av hur djupt rotat denna konflikt är, pga rädsla
och kanske allra mest okunskap. Skulle den kunna motverkas tror jag
människor inte vore så lättlurade in i att bli brickor eller levande
sköldar i detta politiska vansinnes maktspel..
Din film bidrar med heder just till denna upplysning. Som den
avhoppade israeliska soldaten sa" Om man inte är en del av lösningen
är man en del av problemet".
Tack igen och hör gärna av dig om det finns något du kan tipsa om
som man kan göra för att hjälpa dessa tappra hjältar som kämpar för
ett befriat Palestina.

Recensioner & nervositet
Det har varit en hektisk vecka med flera visningar i Stockholm,
Göteborg och Karlstad. Några har varit utsålda, någon har varit
halvtomma.
Doc Lounge Göteborg
var först, störst och förmodligen bäst. Visningarna i Stockholm var
speciella eftersom två radiogenier var där och i efterhand
formulerade sina egna tankar kirng filmen,
Täppas Fogelberg
och
Kjell Alinge.
Det blev en bra intervju (fem minuter in i programmet) i SR Värmland
och tidningarna i Värmland skrev fina recensioner

och
här.
Nu börjar jag bli neurotiskt nervös inför the big thing,
visningen på
SVT Dokument Utifrån.
Hur ska man tänka och känna inför det faktum att typ en
halv miljon svenskar kommer att bedöma ens arbete? Nöjd
och stolt, hoppas jag.

Smygpremiären i Båstad
Efter den fantastiskt trevliga smygpremiären på filmfestivalen i Båstad i augusti 2010 så fick
Israel vs
Israel bra betyg i flera tidningsartiklar. Läs
Sydsvenskan,
Kvällsposten Expressen,
Helsingborgs Dagblad.
Jag blev glatt överraskad över att biografen i Båstad var fullsatt med folk stående längst bak.
Mest nervös var jag över vad min nära vän och mentor
Gunilla Bresky skulle säga om filmen, eftersom jag har använt både pedagogiska kartor och nyhetsfoto i filmen, något hon direkt avskyr.
Efter filmen vällde folk ut från biografen och många ville diskutera med mig. Jag sökte Gunillas blick och hon såg på mig med stolta ögon.
Med ett stort leende gav hon mig en kram och sa att hon med tvekan accepterar att man behöver trista nyhetskartor för att pedagogiskt förklara konflikten.
Sedan drack vi vin, snaps och rökte alldeles för många cigaretter.
Tack Gunilla, tack för allt.
Hoppas vi ses i Gaza.

Israeliska fredsaktivister
Israel vs Israel har tagit tre år av blod, svett, tårar och existensiell ångest att göra.
Flera gånger har jag tänkt lägga ner projektet, flera gånger har jag tvivlat över min egen förmåga att göra dokumentärfilm.
Men har man privilegiet att komma nära fascinerande personer som Yehuda, Jonathan, Ronny och Arik så växer man som människa.
Någonstans under dessa filmdagar var det ganska lätt att kämpa vidare, trots att motivationen att sova på Ramsis Hostel och duscha i kallvatten kom och gick.
Tårgasen i Ni'lin kommer aldrig få mig att sluta jobba i
mellanöstern.
Varför gjorde jag den här filmen?
Svaret är att jag fortfarande vill rädda världen, trots allt.
